"Nothing I did in the Hollywood studios is worth mentioning. Very few of the major characters in my novels operate on a criminal level. They live in neighborhoods of low real estate value, which is a different thing entirely."
David Goodis, in a letter to William David Sherman, November 11, 1966.
(From the Yale Collection of American Literature, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, by way of Lou Boxer.)
Someone needs to publish THE GOODIS LETTERS or something. I'd buy it.
ReplyDeleteYou and me both, Ray. Sadly, I don't think many letters exist. I've been through the Goodis archives at Temple U., and there are a handful. And the lawyers for his estate say there isn't much else out there.
ReplyDeleteStill, one can hope for an attic discovery one of these days.
I've heard that before. How have I heard it before? Was it a dream?
ReplyDeleteI'd also love to see a collection of Goodis's magazine writing collected, especially his Flying Aces type tales.
ReplyDeleteKeep preaching the Good(is) word!
