The Wheelman Rides in Paris

The French edition of my crime novel The Wheelman is out this month from Rivages/Noir, and once again, I'm loving the cover. Yes, I'm sure a lot of that has to do with the classic Rivages look, and the fact that so many of my crime writing heroes (David Goodis, James Ellroy, Donald Westlake/Richard Stark) have been published by the same line. But the cover image is also spot-on. You've got a guy running down a road, scrambling for his life, much like Lennon in the novel. And I'll be damned if this doesn't remind me (kinda sorta) of the narrow tunnel that shoots under the Philadelphia Museum of Art, if you're cutting from Fairmount Avenue to I-76. (Philadelphians will know what I'm talking about here.) Anyway, what do you guys think?

Also: If any of you read French, I'd love to know what the translated title means. Best Babelfish can tell me is "any pace." And that just sounds... weird.

(Once again, huge thanks to Frédéric Fontès for the tip.)

I thought that meant "see you later" but it's been a while since high school french class.

It's an idomatic French phrase that means something like to go all out, at full speed.

The cover is badass, as is the cover. Ed is also correct - "A tout allure" means "at full speed" (7 years of French finally came in handy).

While I do tend to be redundant, that should read, "The cover is badass, as is the title."

And you're right -- throw in a homeless guy and some graffiti and that could be the Art Museum tunnel.

Great cover. Really does express going all out. Also must say I really enjoyed the book too when I read it one night last year in one sitting. Couldn't sleep till I knew how it ended.

That is a great cover. One of the best I've seen in a while.

"Full tilt", or, in your case, "balls to the wall".

That tunnel near the Art Museum is short, but it is also the scariest tunnel I've ever gone through. Every time I do, it feels like someone is trying to trap my car for some sort of wild-ass sneak attack.

it means "full speed ahead"
