Mulholland On My Mind

Yesterday Little, Brown announced the name of their new suspense imprint (which was first reported by Sarah Weinman months ago): Mulholland Books. I'm proud to say that my next three novels will be among the first wave of releases, along with Marcia Clark, Lawrence Block, Mark Billingham, Michael Robotham, Charlie Huston, Daniel Woodrell, and others. You can check out the official page and trailer right here.

If you ask me, the name of the imprint is dead perfect. "Mulholland" sits nicely alongside Little, Brown's other "place name" imprint--Grand Central. The very idea of twists and turns set against a backdrop of the unofficial noir capital of the world is right on target, too. (If you've ever driven Mulholland, especially at night, you'll understand the edge-of-your-seat feeling the name evokes.) But cool name aside, I'm really happy to be working with the whole Mulholland Book crew, especially editor John Schoenfelder, who's one of the best-read dudes I've ever met. It's almost impossible to stump him with a genre novel and/or writer from the past 30 years. In short, he's almost as big a crime/mystery/horror/SF geek as I am.

As for those next novels... well, it's a trilogy. To be released almost back-to-back next spring/summer. I don't want to reveal too much, but the first installment is called Fun & Games, taken from one of my favorite sayings ("It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye"). And F&G will be my first novel set in a city other than Philadelphia. Not than I don't love Philly dearly, but... sometimes you just want to see other cities, you know?

You're a tease, Duane! A tease, I says! Can't wait for all of the Mulholland titles to hit.

Stay with Philly!

Very cool. A trilogy, you say?

When will we hear more about that?

Sonny: Don't worry. I'm not abandoning Philly entirely. There's quite a bit of the City of Brotherly Love in the upcoming trilogy, and I have an extremely Philly-centric book planned for the near future.

Devinjay: Yep, a trilogy. I'll share more details later this year.

My condolences on the Flyers loss. I'm from Montreal, so I know how it goes.

This imprint sounds really exciting, and that list of authors is great.

Duane, congrats on being part of what promises to be a terrific new imprint. The trilogy sounds very exciting -- especially the near back-to-back release schedule! Funny, too -- I've always loved that saying as well. Can't wait for 'em.

Also: just finished EXPIRATION DATE. Absolutely outstanding...I just loved it. It's probably my favorite of yours since THE WHEEL MAN. Keep up the great work.

Thanks so much, Ron C. Really thrilled you enjoyed EXPIRATION. (And I really appreciate you mentioning it on Rara Avis the other day.)

Duane, thanks so much for linking to the Mulholland website. There's a lot of exciting things going on there now. So far, we've had a column by Nick Tosches, an interview of Don Winslow by Shane Salerno, and an intriguing piece by Lawrence Block on the disappearance of one of his early novels, "Sinner Man."

It was great having you participate in the live chat with Don Winslow and hope that you continue to visit and partake in the crime/suspense/thriller community that is building around the Mulholland Books. We anticipate that it will become a hub for readers and writers of the genre alike.
