Iron, Like a Lion, in Zion

Some cool news that I've been sitting on for... oh, quite a few months now: I'm going to be taking over The Immortal Iron Fist starting this July. For a kid who grew up on Saturday afternoon Kung Fu flicks, and used to jump around in his underwear, thinking he was Caine, to the tune of Carl Douglas's "Kung Fu Fighting," it's a dream gig. Leaving the book are mad geniuses Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction, who have spent 16 (plus) issues building the coolest, freakiest, Kung Fu/action/pulp/adventure ever, and I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be stepping into Danny Rand's yellow Ninja boots. The new artist is Travel Foreman, and you can see a sample of his work (from our first issue) at left. If you don't think this looks cool, ask someone to check your pulse.

A bunch of interviews popped up today at various comics sites, if you want to hear more from myself, Brubaker, Fraction and Iron Fist editor Warren Simons.

Comic Book Resources (Dave Richards)
Newsarama (Steve Ekstrom)
Comics Bulletin (Dave Wallace)

Update: Now there's a story from Tim Stevens up at Marvel.com, too.

Congrats, Duane.

Jesus... you are becoming prolific.

I've been reading Cable... awesome stuff. I look forward to your work on Iron Fist. And hopefully more Punisher...

Again, Congrats, Duane. You deserve the success.

@#$! That's pretty cool news. It's great to see so many good hardboiled writers get to write cool comics!

Iron Fucking Fist? Duuuude.

I've got an old issue of Iron Fist that, I swear, must be late 70s, early 80s, and I always thought, "Yeah, that's cool shit."

But this looks like even cooler shit. Damn it, back on the monthly money vacuum for me. And I've been off the stuff for SO LONG.

Oh, HELL YES. I've been following Iron Fist on the Fraction/Brubaker run, and you've got a hell of a lot to live up to - those blokes have been ripping it up.

Congratulations, big-time.

Fantastic news Duane.Can't wait.

True story - I was on vacation in New York last week and bought The Wheelman (because I can't get your stuff in Ireland). I left it in a bag somewhere with a mug.....

Goddam! He's my all-time favorite character(& the Question) who I feel never got his justice until Brubaker and Fraction started over. Sweet Christmas Duane, that's awesome news.

OK, so I finally got myself to a point where I could leave the Iron Fist story and not buy it anymore.

Brubaker is a very hard guy to stop reading, but now that you are on board I'm really happy to pick it up again.

If anybody can pick up the baton from Brubaker it is you.

Give 'em all that noir twisty shit you are so good at. I can't wait.

I’m not sure people realize how frikin’ HUGE this is. Iron Fist is one of the coolest books out right now, and Brubaker is one of the hottest writers working in comics. The fact they’re handing over the title to you is a big deal.

Congrats.

Duane -

I just started reading your work this weekend, after blasting through THE BLONDE, which was outstanding, by the way, and now, you're taking over my favorite Marvel title, IRON FIST.

Well, favorite until I read CABLE #1. Consider yourself my new favorite writer - I'm starting THE WHEELMAN next! Take care, man!

I sold a couple years ago my comic collection that I'd accumulated as a kid, but kept three: my first comic (a Batman); a Spectre (like to think of it as the bridge that took me from comics to (horror) books; and the origin issue of Iron Fist, which was always one of my favorite comics.

Shoulda kept a Spiderman or two, but I digress...

Very cool coincidence that you'd pick up this series. Congrats!

Hey Duane...sorry if I let the cat out of the bag yesterday. The Iron Fist news was all over the comic boards so I apologize if I stole your thunder.

Please don't hit me with your chi.

Thanks for the good wishes guys. Though after reading some of the message board comments, I think I became the Antichrist of comics yesterday...

Marc, no worries. The cat was already out and screaming.

God forbid some people actually want to give the new creative team on a book...wait for it....a chance

And there was me thinking that Chuck Austen still had that particular award on his mantlepiece.

Don't worry about it. Not that you are. But you shouldn't worry, anyway. Do your thing, LeBlanc.

I've no problem with a change in writer on this my current favorite comic. I'm not familiar with your stuff, but I seriously doubt you or anyone else would do a one-eighty with the direction of the book, considering how well crafted and established it has been.

That being said, I'm not too keen on Travel Foreman's art, especially over Aja (when he was able to finish pages for the book). Also, you may want to clarify whether Danny is going back to the OG costume or not -- that seems to be a big point of contention among the whiners. Good luck! And don't take it personally -- this reaction would've happened to anyone in your shoes. Also, the tiny number of anonymous voices on comics message boards doesn't represent all comics readers, and anonymity encourages people write stuff they'd never say to your face.

Thanks, Justin. I do hope you give it a shot. Let me know what you think in July.

Duane,

as far as i'm concerned, the comics world needs more anti-christ! welcome to Iron Fist and the special place on my shelf reserved for Bru's CAp and Daredevil, Jason Aaron's Scalped, Bru's Criminal, Azzarello's 100 Bullets and my well thumbed Hard Case Crime re-issues.

And Victor, talk to Joe Q about writing a Luke Cage on-going or talk to Dan Didio about taking ver All-Star Batman and Robin and turning it into the real crime drama it could be.

As an Iron Fist fan, I wish you the best of luck! I'll be reading it, and will be looking forward to good things from you! Knock it out of the park!

I hope Danny keeps his crazy sense of humor! And yeah, a lot of people fear going back to the old costume, it appears.

Don't let the negative comments get to you.

Duane Swierczynski said...

Hey, Mico! Great to see you 'round these parts. If you have a chance, send me your email address at duane.swier AT verizon.net. I'd love to talk to you off-blog.

Thanks, Kevin. Antichrist it is.

And Anonymous: humor is definitely going to remain part of Danny's world. And I'm honestly not bothered by the comments. Either people will dig the work, or they won't.

Who did the Chinese translation on that page? Was it supposed to say "It begins here?" The translator didn't seem to understand it and wrote it word-for-word in Chinese, with no regard for grammar or meaning.

I would have written: "一切就由此開始." (It means "It all begins here.") Not sure whether that's appropriate without knowing exactly what "it" is.
