Got a Date Tonight?

Yep, it's finally out today—my debut Marvel Comic. If you're anywhere near a comic shop today, and have $3.99 burning a hole in your pocket, this little mother is there waiting for you. The cover is by Dave Wilkins (also making his Marvel debut), the pencils are by Jefte Palo (yep, another debut), so I guess it's kind of a freshman issue all around. Not that you'd know it by looking at the art—it's stunning.

Anyway, I'm off to Brave New Worlds in a few hours to pick up the issues. Hope the guys at the counter don't fuck with me. ("What? You wanted us to order extra copies? Sorry, man... we just got this one, and it's for Joe-Bob. Joe-Bob's pit bull, actually.")

[To the 16-year old cashier while urking around the New Releases with a passel of MK's in hand, shifting from foot to foot]

"I don't know if you know me... I'm kind of a big deal..."

As annoying as I find the dark dark darker than thou take Charlie Huston has been inflicting on readers for the past 18 months, this story was a much stronger take on the same themes.

It was nice, for example, to see Moon Knight saving people BEFORE they got hurt.

  4. Tiffany: Nice one. But the cashier was at least 22, 23.

David: Can't wait to hear what you think.

Jeff: You'd admit to that in public?

Dan: For the record, I'm a big fan of Charlie's "darker than thou" approach; I think no one does "fucked up" quite like Mr. Huston. But I'm also glad you dug the annual. Thanks for picking it up!

Marvel didn't send you any comped copies?

  8. Hey Duane, welcome to the weird world of comics!

I ordered my copy of Moon Night and I'll have it in my hands next week. (That’s going to make this week drag by.)

I was thumbing through the new issue of Previews and noticed that you wrote another Marvel title.

Tell us a bit about the Punisher: Force of Nature One-shot.

    Eric "the mailman" Hebert

PS - Any other comics going to have your name on them?

  9. Anonymous: Yep, Marvel sends a few comps. But I had a bunch of family and friends to buy for. (Plus, how else am I going to artificially inflate those sales figures?)

Eric: Welcome! There's a quick summary of that Punisher one-shot here: www.marvel.com/catalog/?id=8210.

And the monthly I'm writing, CABLE, kicks off in March.

  10. I just learned from Publisher's Weekly of all places that we had a comic writer in Philadelphia here. Marvel's most schizophrenic character has always had endless potential. I will pick up my copy of your version of him tomorrow. VERY CURIOUS!!!

  11. Hey, Brady, hope you dig it. Sadly, the story doesn't take place here in Philly. But other stories will soon...

  12. OK, I definitely dug it. Duane, I think you should bring staged reading s of comics to Philadelphia. Get Marvel to send you a crate of these, invite all your friends out to an Eve of New Year's Eve party and do some sort of backstory talk about how you figured it out, and then get three friends to act out the critical scene with the alley fight and the taser and stuff.
If you need someone to volunteer to be Moon Night, I'd totally do it. I could make a cowl and cape out of twin size sheet and four safety pins.
Draw a moon on white t-shirt. Done.
    AWESOME!
They do that stuff in NYC man, bring it HERE!!!

  14. Yea baby, that was Duane all over again!

I've just read your Moon Knight issue and I was very happy to see you keep the Noir alive.

Buddy, 2008 is going to be a great year for you!
